About Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
RPL refers to the occurrence of two or more consecutive and spontaneous pregnancy losses. The most frequent cause of early miscarriage in 60% of cases is a chromosomal abnormality in the embryo. Some other causes of RPL include structural or anatomic defects of the uterus, hormonal disorders, blood disorders and immunologic conditions. Following a thorough evaluation, a definite cause can be found in 50% of patients.
Treatments
The initial evaluation of RPL includes hormonal testing, clotting screen, chromosomal testing and evaluation of the uterine cavity. After the initial work-up, all test results are reviewed with the patient. Treatment for RPL needs to be individualized based on the findings of the test results. Based on a detailed review of the findings, Dr. Pinto makes recommendations to help optimize subsequent pregnancy outcomes.
Simple measures such as a healthy lifestyle, eliminating smoking as well as avoiding excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption combined with moderate exercise and weight control have been shown to improve outcomes in patients with RPL. The good news is that frequently, a successful pregnancy can often be achieved with close monitoring (lab work and ultrasound) and supportive care. This careful monitoring apparently reduces the stress associated with recurrent pregnancy loss thereby improving outcomes.
